Vat Savitri Vrat FAQ

The Vat Savitri Vrat is one of the best-loved fasts of married Hindu women, but anyone keeping it for the first time, or living far from family, soon has practical questions: who may keep it, which date to follow, whether water is allowed, how many times to walk around the banyan tree and what to do with the thread afterwards. The answers below describe common practice. Customs differ a great deal between regions and families, so where your family has its own way, follow it, and when in doubt ask an elder or your family priest.

For the full order of worship see the Vat Savitri puja vidhi, and for this year's dates see the Vat Savitri date page.

Frequently asked questions

Who keeps the Vat Savitri Vrat?

It is kept mainly by married Hindu women for the long life, health and well-being of their husbands and families. They honour Savitri, who according to the story won back the life of her husband Satyavan from Yamraj, and they worship the banyan tree under which Satyavan is said to have lain in her lap. Devotees keep it as an act of faith; it is a prayer, not a guarantee of any result.

Can unmarried girls keep the Vat Savitri Vrat?

Traditionally this is a vrat of married women (suhagin), and in many families unmarried girls do not take the formal vow. In some regions, however, unmarried girls keep a simple fast or join the puja, praying for a good life partner, much as Savitri chose Satyavan. Others simply go with their mother to the banyan tree, listen to the katha and help with the puja. Follow the custom of your family.

Can widows take part?

Because the vrat is tied to a husband's well-being, widows usually do not take the sankalp for it. Many still go to the banyan tree, offer water, listen to the story of Savitri and help other women with the puja, since worshipping the banyan and hearing a sacred story is open to all. Family and community customs vary, and no one should be made to feel unwelcome.

Can men take part?

The fast itself is kept by women, but men are welcome to take part. Husbands often accompany their wives to the banyan tree, help carry the puja items, listen to the katha and take blessings from elders. In some customs the wife fans her husband with the pankha after the puja. Men may also water and honour the banyan tree on this day.

What is the difference between the Amavasya and Purnima dates?

In the purnimanta calendar of North India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Uttarakhand, the vrat is kept on Jyeshtha Amavasya, often the same day as Shani Jayanti. In Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka and other western and southern regions it is kept on Jyeshtha Purnima as Vat Purnima, about 15 days later. The story, the worship of the banyan and the spirit of the fast are the same; only the date differs.

Which date should I follow?

Follow the custom of your family, which usually means the custom of your husband's family and the region it comes from. A woman from Bihar married into a Maharashtrian family, for example, will usually keep Vat Purnima with her in-laws. Living in another city or country does not change the family tradition. If you are unsure, ask your mother-in-law or a family elder.

Is the vrat kept for one day or three?

Traditionally the vrat spans three days, from Trayodashi to Amavasya or Purnima, following Savitri's three-night vow in the Mahabharata. Most women today fast on the main day only, and some fast lightly on the first two days. Either way is common practice.

Can I drink water during the fast?

Many women keep a nirjala (waterless) fast until the puja is complete. Others drink water, or take fruit and milk, and this is equally accepted in many families. The vrat falls in May or June, often in great heat, so drink plenty of water the evening before and after the fast, and avoid standing in the midday sun. Pregnant or nursing women, the unwell, the elderly and anyone on medication should consult a doctor and may keep a phalahar or lighter fast. This is not a substitute for medical advice.

Can you eat salt during the Vat Savitri fast?

On the day of the fast most women avoid ordinary cooked food and salt until the paran. Those who keep a phalahar fast often eat fruit, milk and dishes made without ordinary salt; in some homes sendha namak (rock salt) is used instead. After the fast is broken, the meal is sattvic: no onion, garlic, meat or alcohol. Whether salt is taken in the evening meal is a family custom. The vrat food page has more ideas.

When should I break the fast?

The fast is broken (paran) after the puja and the katha are complete. A common custom is to swallow a few soaked black gram (bhige chane), and in some regions a tender banyan bud, with water, and then take prasad. Some women break the fast soon after the morning or midday puja; others wait until evening, and where the three-day vrat is kept, some break it the next morning. Follow your family's custom.

What should a woman do if she has her periods on the day?

Common practice is that a woman during menstruation does not touch the banyan tree or the puja items and does not perform the puja herself. Many still keep the fast, listen to the katha and pray mentally, and another woman of the family may do the parikrama and offerings on her behalf. Some families today follow a more relaxed approach. Customs vary, so follow your family's practice.

Can pregnant women keep the Vat Savitri Vrat?

Many pregnant women do take part in the puja, but a strict nirjala fast in summer heat is not advisable during pregnancy. Common practice is to keep a phalahar fast with water, fruit and milk, or simply do the puja and listen to the katha without fasting. Walking around the tree many times in the heat can also be tiring, so fewer rounds are fine. Please consult your doctor. This is not a substitute for medical advice.

Can the vrat be kept without a banyan tree?

Yes. If there is no banyan tree nearby, many women worship a small banyan branch brought home the day before, a banyan sapling in a pot, or a picture of the banyan tree with Savitri and Satyavan. Some women also go together to a temple that has a banyan tree in its grounds. Devotion matters more than the setting.

Can Vat Savitri puja be done at home?

Yes. With a banyan branch, sapling or picture placed on a clean stool, the whole puja can be done at home: offering water, roli, akshat and flowers, tying the thread around the branch while circling it, reading the katha and offering soaked gram. Women in flats and in other countries often do it this way. The steps are on the puja vidhi page.

How many rounds of thread are tied around the banyan tree?

The most common numbers are 7, 11, 21 or 108 rounds (parikrama), winding the thread around the trunk with each round. Seven is the most usual, and many women do 108 when they can. The number is a matter of family custom and of what you can manage comfortably; sincerity counts for more than the count.

What colour thread is used?

Traditionally raw white cotton thread (kachcha sut) is used. Many women also use red or yellow thread, or a red and yellow raksha sutra (mauli), and some dip raw thread in haldi to colour it yellow. Any clean cotton thread offered with devotion is acceptable.

What should I do with the thread and soaked gram afterwards?

The thread wound around the banyan is left on the tree. Some women take back a small piece and tie it on the wrist or keep it in the puja place. The soaked gram is offered at the puja, a few grains are swallowed for the paran, and the rest is shared as prasad or given with the baya to the mother-in-law. Leftover flowers and puja materials are placed at the roots of a tree or in flowing water, not thrown away with household waste.

Is the first Vat Savitri special?

Yes. A newly married woman's first Vat Savitri is often celebrated with extra care: she wears her bridal finery or new clothes with full solah shringar, and her family or in-laws send gifts, clothes and suhag items. In many regions she receives or gives the baya and touches the feet of her mother-in-law. Read more on the first Vat Savitri page.

Is it necessary to read or hear the katha?

Hearing or reading the story of Savitri and Satyavan is considered an essential part of the puja, and many women say the vrat is not complete without it. Women often sit together under the tree while one of them reads the katha aloud. You can read the Vat Savitri Vrat Katha in Hindi or the story in English.

What should I wear for the puja?

Women usually wear red, yellow, green or other bright colours, often a sari or their wedding outfit, with solah shringar: sindoor, bindi, bangles, mehndi, payal, bichhiya and so on. Black, and in many families white, is avoided. In Maharashtra many women wear a nauvari or traditional sari for Vat Purnima.

What if I cannot keep the fast one year?

If illness, pregnancy, travel or another genuine reason prevents a full fast, you can still do a simple puja, offer water to a banyan tree or a picture, and listen to the katha. Traditionally this is not considered a fault. If you cannot take part at all, many women simply resume the next year.

Still have a question?

If your question is not answered here, remember the spirit of the vrat: Savitri's devotion, wisdom and patience. Do what you can sincerely, follow the custom of your family, and for anything specific to your region or household ask an elder or your family priest.
