Parikrama and Raksha Sutra
The most familiar sight of the Vat Savitri Vrat is a group of married women walking slowly around a banyan tree, winding raw cotton thread around its trunk. This act combines two rituals: the parikrama (circling the tree in reverence) and the tying of a protective thread, often called a raksha sutra. This page explains how it is done, how many rounds are usual, what it is believed to mean, and what to do with the thread afterwards. Customs differ from place to place, so follow local practice where it differs.
The thread used
The thread is kachcha sut, raw unbleached cotton thread, taken as a hank or reel. Many women use it white; others dye it yellow with haldi or red with kumkum, or use a red and yellow moli. Before the parikrama the thread is usually touched with roli and haldi and offered to the tree with akshat and flowers, so that it becomes part of the puja. See the puja samagri list for the other items.
How to do the parikrama
- Finish the first offerings: Offer water at the roots, apply roli, haldi and sindoor, offer flowers and light the lamp, as in the puja vidhi.
- Tie the starting end: Tie one end of the thread loosely to the trunk, or hold it against the bark at the point where you begin.
- Walk clockwise: Walk around the tree in the clockwise direction, keeping the tree on your right. This is the usual direction for parikrama in Hindu worship.
- Wind as you walk: Let the thread unroll from your hand so that it wraps around the trunk with every round. Keep it at a comfortable height, roughly waist to chest level.
- Pray while walking: Many women silently repeat a prayer to Savitri or the name of God, or simply hold the wish for the family's well-being in mind.
- Count the rounds: Complete the number of rounds your family follows, then tie the end of the thread to the earlier turns.
- Bow: Fold your hands, bow to the tree and offer soaked gram and fruit.
How many rounds
The most common number is 7 rounds. Many women do 11, 21 or 108, and some groups follow numbers handed down in their own community. Seven echoes the seven rounds of the Hindu wedding and is widely believed to recall the bond of seven lives. 108 is a sacred number in Hindu practice and is chosen by those who wish to do a fuller worship. If the tree is very large or the crowd is heavy, a smaller number done with devotion is perfectly acceptable; no number is said to be wrong.
| Rounds | Common understanding |
|---|---|
| 7 | The most common; linked by many to the seven pheras of marriage |
| 11 | Kept by many families as an auspicious count |
| 21 | A fuller worship in some regions |
| 108 | The sacred count of a mala; done by those who wish an elaborate puja |
Meaning of the thread and the rounds
Devotees understand the ritual in several ways. The banyan lives for centuries and keeps spreading through its aerial roots, so it is seen as a symbol of long life and continuity; binding a thread around it is a prayer that the married bond may be just as lasting. The thread is also seen as a raksha sutra, a protective binding, recalling how Savitri held fast to Satyavan and did not let Yama take him. A popular belief holds that Brahma lives at the roots of the banyan, Vishnu in the trunk and Shiva at the top, so circling it is taken as circling all three. What to do with the thread afterwards
- On the tree: Most of the thread is left wound around the trunk. It is an offering and is not taken back.
- A piece to wear: In some families a short length is kept aside before winding, offered to the tree, and then tied on the woman's wrist or neck, or on the husband's wrist, as a raksha sutra.
- Removing it: A thread worn on the wrist is usually kept until it falls off or is removed after some days. Many people then place it at the foot of a tree, in a plant pot or in flowing water, rather than throwing it in the rubbish.
- Caring for the tree: Use plain cotton thread, not plastic or wire, and avoid tying it so tightly that it cuts the bark.
Frequently asked questions
Can the parikrama be done around a banyan twig at home?
Yes. Women who cannot reach a tree wind the thread around a banyan twig placed in a pot, or walk around a picture of the tree on a chowki.
Should the thread break, is it a bad sign?
No. Thread often snags on rough bark. Simply tie the ends together and carry on.
