Vat Savitri Vrat Food

Food on the Vat Savitri Vrat is simple, seasonal and closely tied to the puja. Soaked black gram, ripe mangoes and other summer fruits, puri and a sweet such as kheer or gulgule appear in homes across North India, while Vat Purnima kitchens in Maharashtra and Gujarat have their own favourites. This page covers what is commonly eaten before the fast, during the day for those not keeping a nirjala fast, and for the paran. Food customs vary from family to family, so follow your own household's practice.

The day before

Women who will keep a strict fast usually eat a light, sattvic meal the evening before: dal, rice or roti, a vegetable and curd, cooked without onion or garlic in many homes. It helps to eat early, avoid very salty or spicy food that causes thirst, and drink plenty of water, coconut water or buttermilk. This is also the time to soak the black gram for the puja.

During the day

Many women keep a nirjala fast and eat or drink nothing until the paran. Those who keep a phalahar fast commonly take:

  • Water, coconut water, lemon water or buttermilk to stay hydrated
  • Seasonal fruits: mango, banana, watermelon, muskmelon, litchi, jamun
  • Milk, curd or a glass of thandai
  • Makhana (fox nuts), dry fruits and a little sabudana khichdi in some homes

Grains and lentils are generally avoided during the fast, though families differ. Read more on how to observe the vrat.

Paran: breaking the fast

The fast is usually broken after the puja with the prasad offered to the banyan tree. In many homes the woman first swallows a few soaked black gram with water, and in some families a tender banyan bud, without chewing. She then eats the bhog that was offered, followed by a home-cooked meal. Common paran foods are:

  • Soaked or boiled black gram: Often lightly sautéed with ghee, cumin and salt as a chana prasad.
  • Puri and aloo sabzi: A festive North Indian combination.
  • Kheer: Rice and milk pudding, sometimes made with jaggery.
  • Gulgule and pua: Sweet fritters of wheat flour and jaggery, popular in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
  • Mango: Ripe mangoes are almost always part of the offering in June.
  • Jackfruit, litchi and banana: Common seasonal fruits in the bhog.

Health note

The vrat falls in the hottest weeks of the year in much of India. Many women keep a nirjala fast, but pregnant or nursing women, women who are unwell, the elderly and anyone on medication, including people with diabetes or blood pressure problems, should consult a doctor first and may keep a phalahar or lighter fast. Drink plenty of water before and after the fast, avoid standing long in the midday sun, and break the fast gently with water, fruit and light food before a heavy, fried meal. If you feel dizzy, weak or faint, drink water and rest. This is not a substitute for medical advice.
