First Vat Savitri After Marriage

A new bride's first Vat Savitri is a special occasion in many families. It is often her first vrat as a married woman in her new home, and both families take part: her mother's home (maika) sends gifts, her mother-in-law guides her through the puja, and the women of the neighbourhood welcome her at the banyan tree.

This page brings together the customs most families follow for a first Vat Savitri: the baya and gifts from the mother's home, what to wear, how the puja is done with the mother-in-law, and how the customs differ by region. Practices vary a great deal from family to family, so the best guide is always an elder woman of your own household.

Why the first Vat Savitri is special

Vat Savitri is kept by married women for the long life and well-being of their husbands and family, in memory of Savitri, whose devotion and wisdom, according to the story of Savitri and Satyavan, won back her husband's life from Yama. For a new bride, the first vrat marks her entry into the circle of suhagins who keep it every year. In many homes it is celebrated almost like a small ceremony, with new clothes, gifts and blessings from elders.

Baya and gifts from the mother's home

In much of North India, especially Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the bride's parents send a set of gifts to her in-laws' home before her first Vat Savitri. This is usually called the baya or bayana, though the name and contents differ by region. A typical set may include:

  • A new sari or outfit for the bride, often red or another bright colour.
  • Suhag items: sindoor, bindi, bangles, mehendi, alta, kajal, a comb and a mirror.
  • Clothes or a sari for the mother-in-law, and sometimes for other elders.
  • Seasonal fruits such as mango, litchi or jamun, along with sweets and puris or pakwan.
  • Hand fans (pankha) of bamboo or palm leaf, often decorated.
  • Puja items: raw cotton thread (kachcha sut), roli, akshat, a small lota and a thali.
  • Soaked black gram (bhige chane), which plays a central part in the puja.

After the puja, the bride usually offers a baya of fruit, gram, sweets, a sari and suhag items to her mother-in-law and touches her feet. The mother-in-law blesses her and often gives a gift in return. If the mother-in-law is not present, the baya is sent to her or given to another elder woman of the family.

What to wear

Most brides wear their wedding outfit or a new red, yellow or other bright sari, with full solah shringar: sindoor, bindi, bangles, mehendi, mangalsutra, toe rings and anklets. In Maharashtra a nauvari or Paithani sari with green bangles is popular for a first Vat Purnima. Remember the season: Vat Savitri falls in May or June, so a lighter fabric and comfortable jewellery make the long morning easier.

Doing the puja with the mother-in-law

The mother-in-law or another senior woman usually teaches the new bride each step. The common order is:

  1. Wake early, bathe and dress in solah shringar.
  2. Take the sankalp for the vrat with the mother-in-law beside you.
  3. Prepare the puja thali together and go to the banyan tree with the women of the family.
  4. Worship Savitri and Satyavan, offer water at the roots and recite the Vat Savitri mantra.
  5. Walk around the tree tying the raw cotton thread, 7, 11, 21 or 108 times as the family custom says.
  6. Hear the katha, sing the aarti, and fan the tree with the pankha where that is the custom.
  7. Offer the baya to the mother-in-law, touch her feet and those of other elders, and receive their blessings.
  8. Break the fast (paran) as the family does, often with soaked gram and water.

Every step is explained in more detail on the Vat Savitri puja vidhi page.

Regional customs for a first Vat Savitri

  • Uttar Pradesh and Bihar: the baya from the maika is the highlight. In Mithila (north Bihar) the festival is known as Barsait, and a new bride's first Barsait is celebrated with care, with gifts, fans and fruit from her parents.
  • Maharashtra and Goa: Vat Purnima is kept on Jyeshtha Purnima. New brides go to the banyan with other married women in traditional dress, tie threads and offer five fruits; the women exchange vaan (an offering of suhag items) with one another.
  • Gujarat: Vad Savitri is kept by many on Jyeshtha Purnima, and a new bride often receives clothes and sweets from her parents.
  • Away from family: brides who live far from both families often do the puja with a banyan branch at home, follow along on a video call with their mother-in-law or mother, and send the baya by post or courier.

Fasting on the first Vat Savitri

Many women keep a nirjala (waterless) fast from sunrise until the puja is complete. A new bride is often encouraged by elders to keep it as the family does, but health comes first. Pregnant or nursing women, the unwell, the elderly and anyone on medication should consult a doctor and may keep a phalahar or lighter fast. This is not a substitute for medical advice. In the summer heat, drink plenty of water before the fast begins and after it ends, and avoid the midday sun. Ideas for the meal after the fast are on the Vat Savitri vrat food page.

Frequently asked questions

Should a new bride keep her first Vat Savitri at her mother's home or her in-laws' home?

In most families the first Vat Savitri is kept at the in-laws' home with the mother-in-law. Some communities follow the opposite custom, so ask the elders on both sides.

What if the wedding happened only a few days before Vat Savitri?

Many families still let the bride keep the vrat, often in a simple form. Others wait until the next year. Follow your family's custom.

Is the baya compulsory?

No. It is a loving custom, not a religious requirement. Families give what they can, and a simple basket of fruit, gram and suhag items is enough.

Can a new bride keep the vrat if she is pregnant?

She should consult her doctor first. Many pregnant women keep a phalahar fast or simply do the puja without fasting.

What does the husband do on the day?

In some families the husband joins the puja, is fanned with the pankha and offers the first sip of water at paran. In others he simply blesses and supports his wife through the day.
