Vat Savitri Mantra
A handful of short Sanskrit verses run through the Vat Savitri puja. Women take a sankalp (vow) at the start, offer arghya (water) to Savitri with a prayer, pray to the banyan tree while watering its roots, and recite a verse while walking around it with the thread. None of them is long, and many women learn them by heart after a year or two.
This page gives each verse in Devanagari, a Roman transliteration and its meaning in plain English, with a note on where it fits in the Vat Savitri puja vidhi. The wording follows popular puja guides; small differences in spelling are common between booklets. Meanings are given to help understanding; the verses themselves are recited in Sanskrit.
Vat Savitri vrat sankalp
The sankalp is the formal statement of intent. It is said at the start of the vrat, holding a little water, akshat (unbroken rice) and a flower in the right hand, which are then released on the ground or into a plate. A family priest often adds the date, place, family lineage (gotra) and the woman's name; at home the short form below is commonly used.
Transliteration: Mama vaidhavyadi-sakala-dosha-pariharartham Brahma-Savitri-prityartham, Satyavat-Savitri-prityartham cha Vatasavitri-vratam aham karishye.
Meaning: To ward off every misfortune, widowhood first among them, to please Brahma and Savitri, and to please Satyavan and Savitri, I shall keep the Vat Savitri vrat.
Savitri arghya mantra
This is the verse most closely tied to the vrat. It is recited while offering arghya, water poured from a lota, to the goddess Savitri. Some guides use it when pouring water at the banyan's roots as well.
Transliteration: Avaidhavyam cha saubhagyam dehi tvam mama suvrate, putran pautrams cha saukhyam cha grihanarghyam namo'stu te.
Meaning: O Savitri, keeper of noble vows, grant me unbroken married life and good fortune, sons and grandsons and happiness. Accept this offering of water; salutations to you. Many women today understand "sons and grandsons" simply as children and the generations of the family.
Banyan tree prayer while watering the roots
After the arghya, water is poured slowly at the root of the banyan with this prayer. Some guides open it with a line said as the water is poured.
Transliteration: Vata sinchami te mulam salilair amritopamaih. Yatha shakha-prashakhabhir vriddho'si tvam mahitale, tatha putraish cha pautraish cha sampannam kuru mam sada.
Meaning: O banyan, I water your root with water as sweet as nectar. Just as you have grown wide upon the earth with branches and branches upon branches, so may you always keep me rich in children and grandchildren. The prayer draws directly on the image of the banyan, whose aerial roots become new trunks, as a picture of a family that keeps growing. More on this is on the importance of the banyan tree page.
Verse honouring the Trimurti in the banyan
A popular belief holds that Brahma dwells at the banyan's root, Vishnu in its trunk and Shiva at its top. This verse expresses that belief and is recited with folded hands before the tree.
Transliteration: Mule Brahma sthito nityam madhye Vishnuh pratishthitah, agre devah Shivah prokto vatavriksham namamy aham.
Meaning: Brahma always abides at the root, Vishnu is established in the middle, and the god Shiva is said to be at the top: I bow to the banyan tree.
Parikrama mantras
While walking around the tree and winding the raw cotton thread (kachcha sut) around its trunk, women recite a short prayer or simply keep their husband and family in mind. Two verses are commonly used. The first is a salutation to Yama, here called Vaivasvata (son of Vivasvan, the sun), whom Savitri won over by her wisdom.
Meaning: Salutations to Vaivasvata (Yama).
The second is the general verse said during any pradakshina (circumambulation) in Hindu worship.
Transliteration: Yani kani cha papani janmantara-kritani cha, tani sarvani nashyanti pradakshinah pade pade.
Meaning: Whatever wrongs have been done, even in earlier lives, all of them are worn away with each step of the circumambulation. Some booklets end the line "pradakshina pade pade"; the sense is the same. The number of rounds and the way the thread is tied are covered on the parikrama and raksha sutra page.
Order of the mantras in the puja
- Sankalp at the start of the vrat or the puja.
- Worship of Savitri and Satyavan (and in some homes Brahma and Yama), then the Savitri arghya mantra.
- Watering the banyan's roots with the banyan prayer, and the Trimurti verse with folded hands.
- Parikrama with the thread, reciting "Namo Vaivasvataya" or the pradakshina verse.
- The katha, followed by the Vat Savitri aarti.
If the Sanskrit is unfamiliar, it is perfectly acceptable to read the verses slowly from a book or to say the meaning in your own language. Tradition places devotion and attention above perfect pronunciation.
Frequently asked questions
Which is the main mantra of Vat Savitri Vrat?
The Savitri arghya mantra, "Avaidhavyam cha saubhagyam", is the verse most often linked with the vrat. The banyan prayer, "Yatha shakha-prashakhabhih", comes a close second.
How many times should the mantras be recited?
There is no fixed number. Most women say the sankalp once, the arghya mantra once with each offering of water, and the parikrama verse once per round or once at the start.
Can the mantras be recited without a priest?
Yes. In most homes the women of the family perform the whole puja themselves, often with an elder woman guiding the younger ones.
Can the mantras be chanted at home if there is no banyan tree nearby?
Yes. Many women worship a banyan branch or a picture at home and recite the same verses before it.
