Savitri in the Mahabharata
The story told on Vat Savitri comes from the Mahabharata. It is one of the best known episodes of the epic, yet many people know it only through the short versions read at the banyan tree. The epic account is longer and richer: it gives Savitri long speeches on dharma, describes several boons rather than three, and shows Yama yielding not to a trick but to her wisdom. This page explains where the story sits in the Mahabharata, how it is framed, and how it differs from popular retellings.
Where the story is found
The tale of Savitri is in the Vana Parva, also called the Aranyaka Parva, the third book of the Mahabharata, which describes the Pandavas' years of exile in the forest. Within this book it forms a short section often known as the Pativrata Mahatmya, "the greatness of the devoted wife". It is one of several stories told to the Pandavas during the exile to give them hope and guidance.
Markandeya and Yudhishthira
The story is told as a conversation. Yudhishthira, troubled by the suffering Draupadi has borne for the sake of the Pandavas, asks the sage Markandeya whether there has ever been a woman as devoted and steadfast as she. In reply, Markandeya tells him the story of Savitri. The frame matters: the tale is offered as an example of courage and faithfulness in hard times, to comfort a king in exile, not as a ritual text. The fast and the banyan worship of the Vat Savitri Vrat grew around the story later, in the vrat tradition.
The story as the epic tells it
Ashwapati and the birth of Savitri
Ashwapati, the righteous king of Madra, had no children. For many years he kept strict vows and made offerings to the goddess Savitri. Pleased, the goddess appeared and promised him a daughter. The child was named Savitri after her. She grew up so radiant and accomplished that no prince dared to ask for her hand.
Savitri chooses Satyavan
So Ashwapati told Savitri to choose a husband herself. She travelled with the king's elders through hermitages and forests and came back having chosen Satyavan, son of Dyumatsena, the king of Shalva, who had lost his sight and then his kingdom to an enemy and was living in the forest with his wife and son. The epic notes that the boy was named Satyavan because his parents always spoke the truth, and that as a child he loved horses and would model and draw them, so he was also called Chitrashva.
Narada's warning
The sage Narada was present when Savitri returned. He praised Satyavan's virtues, but revealed one fault that outweighed them all: Satyavan would die exactly one year from that day. Ashwapati asked his daughter to choose again. Savitri answered that a choice of this kind is made only once and that she would not choose twice. Narada blessed her decision, and the marriage took place in the forest. Savitri put aside her royal ornaments, wore simple clothes and served her husband and his parents.
The three-night vow
Savitri kept count of the days. When only three remained, she undertook a three-night vow (trirātra vrata), standing day and night in fasting and prayer. On the fated morning she completed her rites, and when Satyavan set out to gather fruit and wood, she asked her in-laws' leave and went with him.
Yama comes
While splitting wood, Satyavan felt a sharp pain in his head, grew weak and lay down with his head in Savitri's lap. Then she saw a tall, dark figure with a noose in his hand. It was Yama himself, who said that he had come in person because Satyavan was a man of virtue. Yama drew out from Satyavan's body his soul, described as a being the size of a thumb, bound it with his noose and set off towards the south.
Savitri follows Yama
Savitri followed. When Yama told her to turn back, she replied with calm words about dharma: that friendship arises from walking seven steps together, that the company of the good is never fruitless, that the virtuous protect the world by their truth. Each time she spoke, Yama was pleased and offered her a boon, though never Satyavan's life. In the epic she receives several boons over this conversation:
- sight and strength for her father-in-law Dyumatsena;
- the return of his lost kingdom;
- a hundred sons for her father Ashwapati, who had none;
- a hundred sons of her own, born to her and Satyavan;
- and finally, moved by her words, the release of Satyavan himself, with a long life.
The boon of sons born to her and Satyavan could only come true if Satyavan lived, and Yama, pleased with her, freed him and blessed them both.
The return
Savitri returned to the place where Satyavan's body lay. He woke as if from sleep. It was already night, and they made their way back through the dark forest to the hermitage, where his anxious parents and the sages were waiting. Dyumatsena had already regained his sight. Savitri told them all that had happened. The next morning messengers arrived from Shalva to say that the usurper had been overthrown and that the people wanted Dyumatsena back as their king. All of Yama's boons came true.
How the epic differs from popular retellings
- Number of boons: Popular versions usually give three boons and make the last one a clever trap. In the epic Yama grants several boons in turn, and he returns Satyavan's life because he is won over by Savitri's words, not simply outwitted.
- Savitri's speeches: Much of the epic chapter is Savitri's teaching on dharma, friendship and the conduct of the good. Short versions often reduce this to a line or two.
- The banyan: The epic does not make the banyan central in the way the vrat does. Its place in the worship comes from the vrat tradition, which links the tree to Savitri and to long life.
- The fast: In the epic Savitri keeps a three-night vow before the fated day. The vrat recalls this, traditionally over three days, though most women today fast on the main day.
- The date: The epic does not tie the event to Jyeshtha Amavasya or Purnima. The calendar dates come from the vrat tradition, which is why regions follow different days; see the Vat Savitri date page.
- Savitri's choice: Some retellings present the marriage as arranged. In the epic Savitri travels and chooses Satyavan herself, and holds to her choice against her father's worry.
Folk versions are not wrong for being shorter; they are made to be recited in a few minutes under a tree. The short story of Savitri and Satyavan and the Hindi Vat Savitri Vrat Katha on this site follow the familiar telling.
- ससुर द्युमत्सेन के लिए आँखों की रोशनी और बल;
- उनके खोए हुए राज्य की वापसी;
- उनके पिता अश्वपति के लिए, जिनके कोई पुत्र नहीं था, सौ पुत्र;
- स्वयं उनके और सत्यवान से सौ पुत्र;
