Vat Purnima
Vat Purnima is the name by which the Vat Savitri Vrat is known in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka and other parts of western and southern India. It honours the same Savitri and the same banyan tree as the North Indian observance, but it is kept on Jyeshtha Purnima, the full moon of the month of Jyeshtha, about fifteen days after the Amavasya on which most of North India keeps the vrat. This page explains how Vat Purnima differs, how it is celebrated in each region, and what stays the same.
For the dates of both observances year by year, see the Vat Savitri date page.
Why Vat Purnima falls on the full moon
India uses two ways of counting the lunar month. In the purnimanta system, common in North India, a month ends on the full moon. In the amanta system, followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka and much of the south, a month ends on the new moon. Regional traditions settled on different days of the same season for the vrat: the North on the Amavasya of Jyeshtha, the West and South on the Purnima. Neither is more correct; each follows its own long custom, and a woman usually keeps the vrat on the day her family and community observe.

The story, the purpose and the heart of the worship are the same on both days: women pray for the long life and well-being of their husbands and families, worship the banyan, tie thread around it and hear the story of Savitri and Satyavan.
Vat Purnima in Maharashtra
In Maharashtra Vat Purnima is one of the most visible festivals of married women. In the morning women dress in nauvari (nine-yard) saris or other traditional saris, with green bangles, mangalsutra, nath and the other marks of a married woman. Groups of women from the same building or lane go together to a nearby banyan, often a tree that has been worshipped by the neighbourhood for generations.
- The tree and the images of Savitri and Satyavan are worshipped with haldi, kumkum, akshat and flowers, and water is offered at the roots.
- Women wind white or coloured thread around the trunk while walking around it, commonly seven times.
- Five fruits are offered in many homes, along with soaked gram and sweets.
- Women apply haldi kumkum to one another and share fruits, wishing each other a long married life.
- In many city homes, where no banyan is near, a banyan branch or a picture is worshipped at home instead.
In recent years many families and local groups have encouraged worshipping a living tree or planting a banyan sapling rather than breaking branches, so that the custom protects the very tree it honours.
Vat Purnima in Gujarat
In Gujarat the vrat is often called Vad Savitri, from vad, the Gujarati word for banyan. Women worship the banyan with kumkum, rice, flowers and thread, walk around it and listen to the katha. Some families follow the older practice of a three-day observance ending on the Purnima, while most women today fast on the main day.
Goa and Karnataka
In Goa, and among Konkani and Marathi-speaking families along the coast, Vat Purnima is kept in much the same way as in Maharashtra, with women gathering at a temple or village banyan. In Karnataka, especially in the north of the state, married women observe the day with banyan worship, thread tying and the Savitri story. Local songs, foods and details vary from town to town.
The fast on Vat Purnima
Many women keep a nirjala (waterless) fast until the puja is complete, while others take fruit, milk or water. The fast is usually broken after the puja and the katha, often with soaked gram and water or a simple meal, following family custom. Vat Purnima falls in the heat of late May or June, so drink enough water before and after the fast and avoid long spells in the midday sun. Pregnant or nursing women, anyone unwell, the elderly and those on medication should consult a doctor and may keep a phalahar or lighter fast. This is not a substitute for medical advice.
The steps of the worship are given in the Vat Savitri puja vidhi, the items in the puja samagri list, and the story to read under the tree in the story of Savitri and Satyavan.
